Portugal Visa Document Checklist: Exactly What Your Consulate Will Ask For
Most Portugal visa refusals are not about whether you qualify. They are about a file that arrives incomplete. A missing apostille, a bank statement printed from an app instead of stamped by the bank, a criminal record that arrived a week after the appointment. The consulate does not call you to ask for the missing page. It hands you a new appointment, often two months out, and the whole timeline slips.
This generator prevents that. Pick your visa route and your nationality, add your family if they are coming with you, and it builds the document list for your situation: what to gather, why each item matters, and which ones need an apostille or a translation. Tick items off as they arrive, print the list, and take it to the appointment. It takes under a minute to build, and it is the cheapest insurance your application will ever have.

Get these first, before the consulate
This list covers what consulates normally ask for. Your consulate may ask for one or two items more, and document rules change, so confirm the final list on your consulate's own page before your appointment. The two items that most often delay an application are the criminal record certificate and the apostille, so start those before anything else.
Start with the two slowest documents
Everything on your list can be produced in days except two items. The criminal record certificate has a lead time measured in weeks, and the apostille or legalisation that goes on top of it adds more. Applicants from the United States wait on the FBI check and a State Department apostille. Applicants from Nepal go through embassy legalisation instead, because Nepal is outside the Hague Apostille system. Order these first, while you are still deciding on the smaller items, and the rest of the file catches up easily.
What the checklist does not do
It builds the document list, not the application. It cannot tell you whether your income proof will convince your consulate, or whether your lease will pass as proof of accommodation. Those judgements belong to the route guides: the D8 guide explains the income bar in detail, and the visa comparison helps you check you picked the right route at all. Get your NIF and bank account sorted early too, because they make the means argument in your file far easier to believe. And if you want the whole sequence in order, the Portugal Admin Planner puts the NIF, bank account, insurance, and visa steps in the order they actually need to happen.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the official document list for my visa?
No single list is official for every applicant, because each consulate adds its own requirements on top of the national rules. This generator covers what consulates normally ask for, grouped by visa route and nationality. Always confirm the final list on your own consulate's page before your appointment.
Which documents take the longest to get?
The criminal record certificate and the apostille. Americans wait on the FBI check plus a State Department apostille, and applicants from countries outside the Hague system wait on embassy legalisation. Start those two before anything else, because everything else on the list can be produced in days.
Do documents need to be translated into Portuguese?
Usually, yes. Foreign civil documents such as birth and marriage certificates, criminal records, and degree certificates normally need a certified translation into Portuguese. Some consulates accept English originals for bank statements and employment contracts, but do not assume that. Ask your consulate which documents it wants translated.
Can I use this checklist if my family is coming with me?
Yes. Tick the spouse and children boxes and the list adds their passports, marriage and birth certificates, and their own criminal records. Every adult applicant needs a separate file, so a family of four is four applications, not one.
