NIF Portugal: How to Get Your Portuguese Tax Number in 2026

The NIF is usually the first piece of Portuguese paperwork a mover needs. It comes before the bank account, before the lease, and sometimes even before the visa. Here is what it actually is, the three ways to get one, what each costs down to the euro, how long each takes, and the traps nobody warns you about.

Key takeaways

  • →A NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is a 9-digit tax number from the Autoridade Tributária. Banks won't open your account without one, landlords want it on the lease, and consulates expect it in D7 and D8 visa files. Every adult needs their own.
  • →Three routes: in person at a Finanças office (usually free; 15–60 minutes for EU citizens), online via a service (€79–$140; 3–10 working days standard, rush as fast as 1–2 days), or through a lawyer (€300–700/year, only worth it if you need ongoing legal cover anyway).
  • →Non-EU non-residents almost always appoint a fiscal representative for the first request. The cheapest all-in bundle is Novomove at €79 (12 months of representation included); the priciest standard option is Bordr at $140.
  • →The number itself is free and permanent. Since July 2022 you can drop the representative later via electronic notifications, but a representative is still how the first remote request normally gets filed.

What is a NIF?

NIF stands for Número de Identificação Fiscal — Portugal's tax identification number. It is nine digits, issued by the Autoridade Tributária (everyone just calls it Finanças), and you'll hand it over in practically every official interaction: the bank, the landlord, the phone shop, the car dealer, the school office.

Without one, simple things stall; with one, doors open. That's really the whole story. It is less a document and more a prerequisite for everything else. For the full background, our explainer on what a NIF is covers the number itself, where it is actually used, and what it is commonly confused with.

Who needs a NIF?

  • Opening a Portuguese bank account (banks ask for it first, before anything else)
  • Signing a rental lease or buying property
  • Applying for a residency visa (D7, D8, Golden Visa, and others)
  • Setting up utilities — water, electricity, internet
  • Filing taxes, starting a business, or registering as self-employed (recibos verdes)
  • Getting a phone contract or buying a car
  • Children too: parents need a NIF per child to claim health and education expenses on their IRS return, and minors get their own nine digits just like adults. Our guide to NIFs for children and families covers the documents, the both-parent signature rule, and the deductions.

In practice, the NIF is step one of the whole relocation stack. If you've got a visa appointment with a fixed date, get the NIF moving before you start counting down to anything else.

How to get a NIF: the 3 routes compared

There are three realistic ways to get a NIF. Which one fits depends on where you are, your nationality, and how fast you need it.

Route 1: In person at a Finanças office (free, or close)

Walk into any tax office in Portugal and ask. For EU/EEA citizens it's usually a 15–60 minute process (plus the queue, which is the real variable): passport or national ID, proof of address, and you walk out with the number.

For non-EU citizens there's a catch: the fiscal representative. As a non-resident from outside the EU/EEA, the office will generally want a Portugal-resident representative appointed before they'll issue the number. Some offices are flexible about this; plenty aren't. Two more things: third-country nationals usually need their passport to show the relevant entry visa (unless Schengen-exempt), and a couple of offices charge non-EU applicants a small administrative fee around €10. Ask at the desk, because policies vary from office to office.

Best for: EU citizens already in Portugal, or anyone passing through with a free morning to spare. Go early; the legendary Finanças queues are real, and booking a senha via e-Balcão beats walking in blind.

Route 2: Online via a NIF service (€79–$140)

Several private services get your NIF remotely. You send passport and address documents plus a signed power of attorney; they act as (or through) your fiscal representative, file the application, and email you the number as a signed PDF certificate. There is no true self-service "online NIF" for foreigners. Every service is really a representative filing through the e-Balcão channel on the Portal das Finanças with Portuguese authentication. That is fine. It is how the system works.

Current October 2026 prices, verified against provider sites and independent comparisons: Novomove €79 (12 months of fiscal representation included, 3–7 days), Visas.pt €95 (no representation, only for people who don't need one, ~7 days, 2-day rush for €50 extra), Anchorless €99 (representation via referral, 3–10 days but often ~3, 1–2 day premium rush), e-Residence €99 (12 months rep included, ~10 days, and they charge €20 extra for the Finanças portal password everyone else includes), NIFOnline.pt €99 (no published timeframe), and Bordr $140 (US-focused, ~7 days, 12 months rep included).

Best for: non-EU citizens applying from abroad who want the number in hand before they travel.

The full side-by-side of price, what's included, delivery times, renewal costs, and review history is in our NIF service comparison, which ranks all six providers on real cost rather than headline prices. For the process itself rather than the provider choice, our step-by-step walkthrough of the online route for non-residents covers the exact filing path, the documents, and the traps to avoid.

Route 3: Through a lawyer (€300–700/year)

A Portuguese lawyer can obtain your NIF and act as your fiscal representative on an ongoing basis. It costs a lot more, typically €300–700 a year, but it makes sense when you need proper legal cover anyway: buying property, setting up a company, untangling a messy tax situation.

Best for: property buyers, and anyone who wants a lawyer in their corner for more than just the number.

Real timelines: what "fast" actually means

RouteRealistic timelineNotes
In person, EU citizen15–60 min + queueNumber issued on the spot by verbal declaration
In person, third-country national1–3 hours + queueSome offices insist on a representative; entry visa may be checked
Novomove3–7 daysFastest standard turnaround in our comparison
Visas.pt~7 days (2-day rush +€50)No fiscal representation — check you don't need it first
Anchorless3–10 days (often ~3); 1–2 day premium rushFastest rush option when a deadline is close
e-Residence~10 daysAdvertises 1–3 business days once docs are complete; typical delivery runs longer
Bordr~7 daysUS-focused onboarding
NIFOnline.ptNo published timeframeHard to plan around — ask before paying

Read rush claims carefully. A "24-hour NIF" usually means the provider files within 24 hours. It does not mean Finanças issues the number in 24 hours. If a deadline is real (visa appointment, property closing), get the delivery promise in writing, not in an ad headline. For the full route-by-route breakdown, see our guide to NIF processing times.

Document checklist

Get these right before you start and you'll skip the most common delay loop:

  • Valid passport (or EU national ID) — unexpired, clearly scanned (photos of a screen are not accepted by some offices and services)
  • Proof of foreign address, under 3 months old — utility bill, bank statement, or driver's license. Must be in English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese; anything else needs a certified translation
  • Signed power of attorney — authorizing your representative to file for you (remote route only; the provider sends the form)
  • Entry visa in passport — if applying in person as a third-country national (not needed if you're Schengen-exempt)
  • For children under 10: birth certificate (passport if they have one), plus the parent's ID
  • Get in writing: that the Finanças portal password is included. A NIF without portal access leaves you locked out of e-fatura and online filings

That is the short version. For the full rules behind each item, including the signature rule on the power of attorney and what changes when you apply in person, see the full NIF document checklist. For the document on its own, see our guide to NIF by power of attorney.

The 3-month rule kills more applications than anything else

Proof of address older than 3 months gets rejected outright, and the back-and-forth of "new document, please" eats 3–5 days per round. Check the issue date on your utility bill or bank statement before you upload it.

Cost table: every option, October 2026

Novomove€7912 months included; renews €79/yr3–7 days
Visas.pt€95Not included~7 days; 2-day rush +€50
Anchorless€99Included (renewal ~€149/yr — the highest here)3–10 days; 1–2 day premium rush

One thing to keep in mind: the number itself is free. You are paying for the representative, the legwork, and the speed, not for the digits. And price the renewal, not the headline: a €79 first year renewing at €149 costs more over three years than a €95 service renewing at €79. For the full breakdown of every route over one year and three years, including the extras that hide in the checkout, see our guide to how much a NIF costs.

Edge cases

Minors

Children get their own NIFs. Under-10s without a citizen card need a birth certificate instead of a passport. If you're moving as a family, request everyone's NIF in one go. You'll need the kids' numbers on your IRS return to claim health and education deductions.

Couples

There's no joint NIF. Each adult applies separately. If one partner is EU and the other isn't, the non-EU partner still needs a representative for the remote route. Marriage doesn't change the tax rule.

Name mismatches

If your passport says one name and your proof of address another (married names are the classic), fix it before applying. Finanças registers exactly what the documents say, and correcting a registered name later is its own bureaucratic sub-quest.

Address changes

If you have moved since your NIF was issued, update your tax address. The AT's circular expects changes within 15 days of a tax relationship arising, and missed tax mail (IMI bills, deadlines) is the quiet killer of non-resident finances. Update it on the Portal das Finanças or through your representative. Our guide to moving your tax address to a new home covers the deadlines and the confirmation step.

Already resident

Once you're a Portuguese tax resident, the representative question disappears. The appointment has to be formally cancelled, not just left to lapse. Don't keep paying a renewal for a service you no longer need.

What can go wrong

  • Stale address proof. If it is older than 3 months it gets rejected, and each document round-trip loses you 3–5 days.
  • The provider goes quiet after payment. NIF services aren't regulated, so pick ones with real, recent review histories (e-Residence has the largest base; Novomove and Anchorless have solid recent reviews) and a written delivery commitment.
  • NIF delivered, portal password missing. You have the number but can't access the Portal das Finanças or e-fatura. Confirm the password is included before you pay. e-Residence charges €20 for it.
  • Renewal price shock. Anchorless renews fiscal representation around €149/year. Read the renewal figure, not the first-year promo.
  • Wrong address on file. The NIF gets issued against your foreign address; move house and forget to update it, and tax mail goes into the void.
  • Office roulette in person. Some Finanças desks process third-country applications without fuss; others refuse without a representative. Have a plan B (a booked service) if your appointment has a hard date.

NIF vs NISS: what's the difference?

These two get mixed up constantly. Here is the clean version. The NIF is your 9-digit tax number from the tax authority. The NISS (Número de Identificação da Segurança Social) is your 11-digit social security number from Segurança Social, the one you need once you work or go self-employed in Portugal. Different authorities, different processes. Most residents end up with both, just not at the same time. Our NISS guide covers the full picture.

Do you need a fiscal representative?

The short version: usually yes at the start, not necessarily forever. Since July 2022, non-EU residents can subscribe to electronic notifications on the Portal das Finanças and drop the representative entirely. A representative is still how the initial NIF request from abroad normally gets made, and it stays mandatory if you hold Portuguese tax ties (property, a car, local income) while living outside the EU.

A lot of guides still quote the pre-2022 blanket rule. Our fiscal representative guide has the actual 2026 position, with a scenario table so you can check your own case, plus what it costs and how to cancel one you no longer need. Shopping for representation on its own? Our fiscal representative comparison prices the standalone options. For the NIF side specifically, see our guide to getting a NIF without a fiscal representative, which works through every situation, from EU citizens in person to the post-issuance electronic notifications route.

And once the NIF lands, the next step is the bank account. No Portuguese bank opens one without it. If you're moving for remote work, the D8 visa guide walks through the income bar and the full application file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a NIF online as a non-EU citizen?

Yes. That is exactly what the online NIF services exist for. They act through a fiscal representative to file your application via the e-Balcão channel. Expect €79–$140 and 3–10 working days (rush options as fast as 1–2 days). You will need a passport scan, a home-country address proof from the last 3 months, and a signed power of attorney.

Is the NIF free?

The number itself, yes. Walk into a Finanças office in Portugal and it is free for EU citizens (usually same day). Non-EU applicants at some offices pay a small administrative fee around €10. Online services charge for the representative, the paperwork, and doing it from abroad, not for the digits.

How long does it take to get a NIF in Portugal?

Same-day in person for EU citizens. Online services: Novomove 3–7 days, Visas.pt ~7 days (2-day rush +€50), Anchorless 3–10 days (1–2 day premium rush), e-Residence ~10 days, Bordr ~7 days. If a visa appointment depends on it, start 3–4 weeks early. Document back-and-forth eats days.

Do I need a NIF before applying for a visa?

For most Portuguese residency visas (D7, D8, Golden Visa), yes, it is expected in your file. You will also need it for the bank account that proves your funds, so there is no version of this where you skip it. Start it the same week you start gathering documents.

What's the difference between a NIF and a NISS?

The NIF is your 9-digit tax number from the tax authority; the NISS is your 11-digit social security number from Segurança Social, needed when you work in Portugal. Different authorities, different processes. Most working residents end up with both, NIF first.

Can I get a NIF without a fiscal representative?

EU/EEA citizens generally can, in person at a Finanças office. Non-EU citizens applying from abroad almost always go through a representative in practice. It is simply how the initial remote request works. Since July 2022 you can drop the representative later by switching on electronic notifications in the Portal das Finanças.

Do my children need NIFs too?

Yes. Each child gets their own nine-digit NIF (birth certificate for under-10s without a passport), and you need the kids' numbers on your IRS return to claim health and education deductions. Request the whole family's in one go.
