How to get your Portuguese NIF online as a non-resident
You can get a Portuguese NIF without ever setting foot in Portugal. That is the good news. The part most people get wrong is how the online route actually works: there is no government website where a foreigner types in their details and a tax number comes out. Every online NIF is filed by a person in Portugal holding a power of attorney, through the tax authority's e-balcão channel. Once you understand that, the whole process stops being mysterious. This is the step-by-step walkthrough of the online route for non-residents, current as of October 2026. For the big picture of all three routes, start with our main NIF guide.
Last checked: October 2026

Key takeaways
- →There is no self-service online NIF for foreigners. The official online channel is the tax authority's e-balcão, and the AT's own instructions say the request must be filed by a legal representative with Portuguese digital authentication. Every online NIF service is this one process, packaged.
- →You need three things: a passport scan, proof of your foreign address less than three months old, and a signed power of attorney. The signature must be officially recognised unless your proxy is a lawyer or a solicitador.
- →The NIF itself is free, and the AT publishes no official processing time for online requests. Private services charge €79 to $140 for the filing and the representation, with realistic delivery of 3 to 10 working days. Read rush claims as filing promises, not issuance promises.
- →After the number arrives, secure your Portal das Finanças password (posted to your representative's address in 5 to 10 business days), verify the certificate's validation code, and decide on electronic notifications before paying for representation you may not need.
The short answer
If you are outside Portugal, the online route is your route. A legal representative files the application for you on the Portal das Finanças, you sign a power of attorney and send two or three documents, and the number arrives by email as a signed PDF certificate. The realistic window is 3 to 10 working days once your documents are accepted, and clean files often come back faster. The number is free from the tax authority. What you pay a service for is the filing, the representation, and the fact that you are not in Portugal.
Why you cannot just apply yourself
The tax authority's own NIF page lists the online option, but it comes with a condition: the request is submitted by the foreign citizen's legal representative. Logging into the Portal das Finanças requires Portuguese authentication: a NIF and password, a Chave Móvel Digital, or a citizen card. You have none of those yet. That is not a loophole a cleverer website can get around. It is how the system is built, and it is why every online NIF offer, from the cheapest to the most expensive, runs the same mechanism: a proxy filing through e-balcão under the path Registo Contribuinte, then Identific, then Atrib/Alte NIF – Singulares, with your documents attached.
Knowing this protects you from two mistakes. The first is hunting for a cheaper official way to do it yourself. It does not exist. The second is assuming every service that sells you a NIF has its own private channel to the tax authority. They do not: they differ in price, speed, and how much hand-holding you get, not in the underlying filing. Choose on reliability and transparency, not on who claims the most direct line to Finanças.
The process, step by step
There are six steps, and only two of them ask anything of you.
Step 1: pick your route. You have two practical choices. A specialist NIF service in the €79 to $140 band, or a Portuguese lawyer at €300 to €700 a year, which is the right call when you need legal cover anyway: buying property, setting up a company, or untangling a messy tax situation. The filing mechanism is identical. What changes is price, speed, and who deals with the paperwork edge cases.
Step 2: sign the power of attorney. The service sends you a POA form. Sign it and return it. If your proxy is a lawyer or a solicitador acting in that capacity, your signature needs no further certification. If they are not, the signature must be officially recognised, through a notary or the equivalent, or the tax authority can refuse the filing. Do not skip this detail. It is a real rejection reason. Our power of attorney guide explains the signature rule and the powers the document must grant in full.
Step 3: send your documents. A clear scan of your passport and proof of your foreign address from the last three months. That is usually the whole file. A utility bill, a bank statement, or a driver's licence showing your address all work. Simple copies are fine as long as they are legible; photos of a screen are not accepted by some providers.
Step 4: the representative files. Your representative logs into the Portal das Finanças, opens e-balcão, registers a new request under Registo Contribuinte / Identific / Atrib-Alte NIF – Singulares, and attaches your documents plus their own ID and the POA. They can follow the request's status inside the portal, so a good service can tell you exactly where your file is.
Step 5: the tax authority reviews and issues. Finanças checks the file. Clean files get a number issued as non-resident. The nine digits follow the standard format: eight sequential digits plus a check digit, and numbers attributed to foreign citizens currently start with 3.
Step 6: you receive the certificate. Your representative gets the signed NIF document and forwards it to you, normally by email. Official certificates carry a validation code that anyone can check on the Portal das Finanças under Certidões e Comprovativos, then Validar Documento. If your provider cannot or will not show you the validation code, ask why.
The documents, done once and done right
Online NIF applications do not fail because the rules are hard. They fail on document preparation, and every failed round costs you days. For the complete list across every route, including what each document has to look like, see our guide to the documents a NIF requires.
- Passport: unexpired, and scanned clearly.
- Proof of foreign address, under three months old. This rule ends more applications than any other. Check the issue date on the bill or statement before you send it, not after the rejection arrives.
- Power of attorney, signed, with an officially recognised signature unless granted to a lawyer or solicitador. If the same person is to be your ongoing fiscal representative, the POA must say so explicitly.
- For children: a birth certificate for under-10s without a passport, plus the parent's ID. Families should file everyone's request together, and both parents sign the power of attorney when a representative files for a child. See our children and families NIF guide for the full family file.
- Language: documents in a language other than English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese need a certified translation. Passports are accepted as they are in practice.
What you do not need: an entry visa, a Portuguese address, or any connection to Portugal beyond wanting the number. The NIF is issued against your foreign address, and that is fine.
How long it really takes
Here is what the timeline really looks like. The tax authority publishes no official processing time for the e-balcão channel, so every delivery number on a commercial site is that firm's own experience, not a government promise. Our October 2026 verification of the main providers produced these bands:
| Route | Realistic timeline | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Novomove | 3–7 days | Fastest standard turnaround in our comparison |
Anchorless | 3–10 days (often ~3); premium rush 1–2 days | Fastest rush option when a deadline is close |
Visas.pt | ~7 days; 2-day rush +€50 | No fiscal representation included |
Bordr | ~7 days | US-focused onboarding |
e-Residence | ~10 days | Charges €20 extra for the portal password |
NIFOnline.pt | No published timeframe | Hard to plan around, so ask before paying |
Two things distort every timeline. The first is document loops: each rejected document costs 3 to 5 days of back and forth, which is why the checklist above is worth ten minutes of your time. The second is rush claims. A "24-hour NIF" almost always means the provider files within 24 hours, not that Finanças issues the number in 24 hours. If a visa appointment or a property closing depends on the number, get the delivery promise in writing and start three to four weeks early. The full timeline picture, including the separate portal password wait, is in our guide to how long a NIF takes.
What it costs
The number is free. There is no government fee for a NIF through any channel, and anyone presenting a "state charge" on the invoice is inventing it. What online services charge for is the filing, the representation, and doing it while you are abroad. In October 2026 the verified band is €79 to $140 for the standard route, and the full price side-by-side lives in our NIF service comparison.
The rule that saves people real money: price the renewal, not the headline. Some services renew fiscal representation at €149 a year, so the cheapest first year can be the most expensive three years. Decide now whether you will need representation after the NIF lands, because that answer changes which provider is actually cheapest. For the same maths across every route, including VAT at checkout and rush fees, see our guide to the total cost of a NIF.
The representative question, cleared up
This is the part that confuses everyone, because two different roles share the word representative. The legal representative is the person who files your online NIF application under your power of attorney. That is a one-time job, and it is finished the moment the number is issued. The fiscal representative is the ongoing contact point with Finanças after you have the number. The tax authority treats them as distinct roles, and a POA that names your filer must explicitly grant fiscal-representation powers if the same person is to stay on as your ongoing rep.
At the moment the NIF is issued to a non-resident, naming a fiscal representative is not mandatory. The duty comes later. If you build a Portuguese tax relationship, by buying property, registering a car, signing a Portuguese employment contract, or starting self-employment, you have 15 days to appoint a representative or switch on the electronic notification channels. Since 2022, joining the e-notification system can replace the representative entirely when you have no other tax ties, and residents of the EU, EEA, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Andorra are exempt either way. For the full situation-by-situation answer, see who can skip the representative for the NIF itself.
Our fiscal representative guide carries the full 2026 position with a scenario table, and our fiscal representative comparison prices the standalone options if you decide you need one on its own.
After the number arrives: three jobs
The certificate in your inbox is the start of the admin, not the end of it.
First, get your portal password. Request the senha for the Portal das Finanças. The tax authority posts it by letter to the tax address on file, which for a non-resident means your representative's address, and they forward it to you by email. Allow 5 to 10 business days. Settle this before you pay: a NIF without portal access locks you out of e-fatura and online filings, and at least one provider has been publicly accused of holding the password letter until customers renew. Get the forwarding in writing.
Second, verify the certificate. Check the validation code on the Portal das Finanças, then check the name spelling and birth date against your passport. Banks stall account openings over a misspelled name, and correcting a registered name later is its own bureaucratic exercise.
Third, decide on notifications. If you have no Portuguese tax ties, switch on electronic notifications and you may never need a paid representative. If you are buying property or earning here, keep the representation. Either way, make the decision deliberately instead of drifting into a renewal.
Then the NIF starts earning its keep. It goes on your bank account application, your lease, and your visa file.
And when you move later, the address on the number needs updating too. Our guide to keeping your tax address current after a move covers the deadlines for each kind of move.
Traps on the online route
Rush promises. Filed in 24 hours is not issued in 24 hours. The gap between those two sentences is where missed deadlines live.
The password holdout. Your portal password is mailed to your representative, and unscrupulous services treat that letter as leverage for the renewal fee. Recent independent reviews describe exactly this pattern. Settle in writing, before paying, who forwards the password and when.
The mandatory-representation upsell. Some providers still tell non-EU customers that ongoing fiscal representation is a legal requirement. Since 2022 it is not, when you have no tax ties and join electronic notifications. That does not make representation a bad buy. It makes the hard sell worth questioning.
Fake fees. There is no government charge for the NIF. Any line item labelled as an official fee is fiction, and a provider that invents one has told you everything about how it does business.
Fresh-file scams. A real provider files under your own power of attorney with documents you supplied. Nobody legitimate gets you a NIF from a residency certificate bought off someone else's flat. That scam ran at scale in Lisbon, the loophole has been closed, and the victims inherited real legal problems for later visa renewals.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Portuguese NIF online myself, without anyone's help?
No. The tax authority's online channel is the e-balcão, and its own instructions say the request must be filed by a legal representative with Portuguese digital authentication. As a foreigner without a NIF, a Chave Móvel Digital, or a citizen card, you cannot log in to file it yourself. The online route always goes through a proxy.
How long does it take to get a NIF online?
The realistic band is 3 to 10 working days once your documents are accepted: Novomove 3–7 days, Anchorless 3–10 days (often around 3), Visas.pt and Bordr about 7 days, e-Residence about 10 days. The tax authority publishes no official processing time, so these are the providers' own experience figures. Document rejections add 3 to 5 days per round.
How much does an online NIF cost?
The number itself is free; there is no government fee. Private services charge €79 to $140 for the filing and the representation. Price the renewal too: some providers renew fiscal representation at €149 a year, which can make the cheapest first year the most expensive over three years.
What documents do I need for an online NIF application?
Three things: an unexpired passport scan, proof of your foreign address less than three months old, and a signed power of attorney. The POA signature must be officially recognised unless your proxy is a lawyer or a solicitador. Children need a birth certificate (under-10s without a passport) plus the parent's ID.
Do I need a fiscal representative to get a NIF online?
No, not at the moment of issuance. The person who files your application is a legal representative, which is a one-time role the tax authority treats as distinct from fiscal representation. A fiscal representative becomes relevant later: if you build a Portuguese tax relationship (property, car, employment, self-employment), you have 15 days to appoint one or join electronic notifications. Since 2022, the e-notification route can replace representation when you have no other tax ties.
What do I receive, and how do I know it is real?
You receive a signed PDF certificate from the tax authority with your nine-digit NIF. Official certificates carry a validation code you can check on the Portal das Finanças under Certidões e Comprovativos, then Validar Documento. Ask your provider for the code and verify it yourself.
What should I do right after getting my NIF?
Three jobs: request your Portal das Finanças password (posted to your representative's address in 5 to 10 business days), verify the certificate's details against your passport, and decide whether you need ongoing fiscal representation or can switch to electronic notifications. Then use the NIF for the bank account, the lease, and the visa file.
NIF rules change quietly. We track them.
