The best NIF service in Portugal (2026): what you'll actually pay

Every NIF provider quotes you a year-one price. That's the number they want you to compare, and it's the wrong one. We re-checked six services in October 2026: headline prices, the fiscal-rep renewals nobody advertises, and the delivery fine print. The "cheapest" and "most expensive" labels flip once you price year two. This page tells you which one to buy for your situation, and why.

Last checked: October 2026

Praça do Comércio in Lisbon, the bureaucratic heart of Portugal
A NIF means dealing with the Portuguese tax authority. These six services do it for you, and we checked what that really costs.

Key takeaways

  • →Best all-rounder: Novomove at €79, with 12 months of fiscal representation bundled, 3–7 day delivery, and bar-registered partner lawyers on your file. Nothing else under €95 includes everything.
  • →The year-two flip: Anchorless looks mid-priced at €99 until the ~€149/year renewal lands; Visas.pt looks steep at €95 until you realize there's no renewal at all. Price the renewal, not the headline.
  • →Non-EU citizens applying remotely need a fiscal representative in practice; EU citizens usually don't. And since Decree-Law 44/2022, third-country nationals can drop the rep after year one via electronic notifications, saving €79–149 a year.
  • →On a deadline: Anchorless's 1–2 day premium rush is the fastest published rush of the six. Just know the Finanças portal password always trails 2–3 weeks behind the NIF. That's the tax office's timeline, not the provider's.

The short answer

If you're non-EU and moving to Portugal, buy Novomove. At €79 it's the cheapest of the six and the only one that bundles a full year of fiscal representation, which you'll need anyway, with the fastest standard delivery we found.

If you're an EU citizen who genuinely doesn't need a fiscal rep, Visas.pt at €95 is the straightforward option. There's no rep, no renewal, and delivery takes about 7 business days. You're not paying for something you won't use. Our fiscal rep guide walks through when the exemption applies.

If you have a visa appointment next week, Anchorless's 1–2 day premium rush exists for exactly this. It costs more and the renewal is the steepest of the six, but a missed appointment costs more than any renewal.

The rest of this page is the reasoning: the decision framework, the two-year math table, and the money-saving legal detail most comparisons never mention. If you'd rather see raw data than verdicts, our NIF provider comparison table has all six side by side.

Three questions that decide your answer

There isn't one "best" NIF service. There's a best one for your answers to three questions.

1. Do you need fiscal representation?

If you're a non-EU citizen applying from outside Portugal, the honest answer is yes. Remote applications run through a local representative. Every legitimate provider bundles or sells one, and Finanças expects it. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens are a different story: you can usually skip the rep entirely by using electronic notifications on the Portal das Finanças.

One detail providers rarely mention: under Decree-Law 44/2022 (Circular Letter 90057), a third-country resident subscribed to the electronic notification channels is exempt from the fiscal-rep obligation. In plain terms, you can drop the rep, and its €79–149 yearly fee, after year one. The one exception: self-employed activity still requires a VAT representative. More on that below. If you need representation beyond a NIF bundle, for example a standalone rep for property or ongoing tax ties, our fiscal representative comparison prices those options separately.

2. How fast do you need it?

Standard delivery across the six runs 3–10 working days, and in practice most land within a week when your documents are clean. Only one provider publishes a rush faster than two days: Anchorless's 1–2 day premium service, the fastest rush in this comparison. Visas.pt also offers a rush option (+€50, within 2 business days). Novomove has no rush option, but its standard 3–7 days is the quickest non-rush turnaround we verified.

One timing detail that catches people out: your NIF and your Finanças portal password don't arrive together. The password is mailed by the tax authority roughly 2–3 weeks after the NIF is issued, and no provider can speed that up. It's baked into the Autoridade Tributária's process. For the full sequence from payment to the number arriving, including the documents and the power of attorney, see our NIF online walkthrough for non-residents.

3. Are you budgeting for one year or two?

This is where rankings flip. The table below prices every provider over two years, headline price plus the renewal, because the renewal is where the real cost of a NIF service lives. For the same maths across every route, including the in-person option and the hidden extras, see our NIF cost breakdown.

The two-year price nobody advertises

Headline prices were re-verified in October 2026. Renewals are the published second-year terms. Check the update log for every price change we've caught.

€99Included€99/yr€198Simple bundle

* e-Residence total includes its €20 Finanças-password surcharge. It is the only provider of the six that charges extra for it.

Read the totals and the usual advice inverts. Anchorless's €99 headline is the third-cheapest; its two-year cost is the highest of the six. Visas.pt's €95 looks like the "expensive" option until you notice there's nothing to renew. Over two years it's €63 cheaper than the cheapest bundled service. And Novomove's headline keeps looking better the further you project it, because €79 a year is the lowest published renewal in this comparison.

One clause worth your attention: Novomove's terms say the fiscal representation auto-renews at €79 per NIF unless you cancel through their process. That's fair and published, but set a calendar reminder for month eleven. Forgetting costs you a year of representation you may no longer need (see the exit hatch below).

The €79-a-year exit most buyers miss

The Decree-Law 44/2022 rule from the first question is where it saves you real money. Once your NIF is issued and you have your Portal das Finanças login, you can activate the electronic notification channels (ViaCTT and the portal's notification system). From that point, the law exempts you, including as a third-country national, from the fiscal-rep obligation.

Novomove's own help center walks buyers through activating this, specifically so you can manage your tax affairs independently after the included first year. That's the honest version of the industry: buy the bundled first year because you need a rep to get the NIF remotely, then drop it. EU/EEA citizens don't even need the workaround. The activation step is optional for them.

The caveat: if you register self-employed activity (recibos verdes) in Portugal, the exemption doesn't cover you. A VAT representative remains mandatory. Our fiscal representative guide has the full 2026 rules and the step-by-step activation.

A closer look at the six

Novomove: the best all-rounder

Read our Novomove review →

€79 gets you the NIF, 12 months of fiscal representation through bar-registered partner lawyers, the Finanças password, and Finanças mail scanned to your inbox within 24 hours. All of it arrives in 3–7 business days. No other provider packs that much into the lowest price. The trade-offs: no paid rush if a deadline sneaks up, and the representation auto-renews at €79 a year unless you cancel. If you also need a bank account, their solo bundle (NIF + account) runs €359, which is €20 less than buying separately. Our NIF + bank account bundle comparison prices every two-in-one deal against buying the halves separately.

Visas.pt: the cheapest no-rep option

Read our Visas.pt review →

It costs €95, takes about 7 business days, and includes no fiscal representation and no renewal. There's a €50 two-day rush if you're in a hurry. This is the right buy exactly when you don't need a rep, and the wrong buy the moment you do, because a standalone rep bought afterwards erases the saving. Visas.pt also handles NISS applications, handy if you're stacking admin tasks.

Anchorless: the fastest when it matters

Read our Anchorless review →

It costs €99 (advertised with a standing €50 discount), includes 6 months of fiscal representation, and offers the fastest 1–2 day premium rush in this comparison. Their help centre describes refunds for delayed NIFs. Standard delivery is quoted at 3–10 days. The honest downside is the ~€149/year renewal, the steepest here. Buy Anchorless for speed, not for the long term: use the Decree-Law exit above and cancel the rep after year one.

e-Residence: the most reviews

Read our e-Residence review →

It costs €99 with 12 months of fiscal representation, and it has, by a wide margin, the largest base of independent reviews of any provider here. If review history is how you judge trust, this is your pick. Two costs to factor in: the Finanças password is a €20 add-on (everyone else includes it), and ~10-day standard delivery is the slowest quoted in this group.

Bordr: the US-friendly option

Read our Bordr review →

It costs $150 (23% Portuguese VAT is added at checkout) and includes 12 months of fiscal representation, with onboarding built for Americans: time zones, US support hours, and familiar payment flows. It's the most expensive option here and priced in dollars, so exchange-rate drift applies. It's worth it if you want to deal with someone on your clock, and overkill if you don't.

NIFOnline.pt: the simple bundle

Read our NIFOnline.pt review →

It costs €99 all-in, with fiscal representation included and a €99/year renewal. Nothing is wrong with the offer, but no published delivery timeframe and the thinnest review footprint of the six make it hard to recommend over Novomove at €20 less. If they ever publish delivery data, we'll re-rank them; our methodology page explains how.

Paying less than the headline

The prices above are the published direct rates: what you pay clicking through from the provider's own homepage. The same services often sell cheaper through referral links: Portugalist currently lists Visas.pt at €64 and Novomove at €69 through its links, against €95 and €79 direct. Those discounts live and die with the affiliate deal, so verify the price at checkout rather than trusting any article's number, including ours.

Couples should check Visas.pt's second-applicant discount: 50% off every service for the second person. Two NIFs direct cost €142.50 instead of €190. That makes it suddenly competitive with the cheapest bundled options, still with no renewal trailing behind it.

And the cheapest line item on this page is a calendar reminder. Novomove's fiscal representation auto-renews at €79 per NIF per year unless you cancel through their process. That's fair and published, but an uncancelled renewal for representation you no longer need (see the Decree-Law exit above) is money for nothing. Set the reminder for month eleven.

How fast can you really get it

A NIF delivery time is really three waits stacked together. First comes the intake wait: you upload documents, they get checked, and you sign a power of attorney. Second comes the filing wait: the provider submits, and Finanças issues the number. Third comes the password wait, the one that surprises everyone: your Portal das Finanças login arrives by post roughly 2–4 weeks later, on the tax authority's timeline. Rush fees only buy speed on the first two waits.

Delivery speed, provider by provider

These figures come from provider sites and help centres, re-verified October 2026. Every clock starts after your documents and signed power of attorney are complete, never at checkout.

NIFOnline.ptNot publishedNone publishedNo data to rank

* Anchorless's help centre lists Regular 5–10 working days, Express 3–5 days and an Instant next-working-day tier; premium pricing moves, so verify at checkout.

Anchorless is the only provider spelling out speed tiers, but the premium price isn't on the landing page. Treat older €149/€249 figures as a guide and confirm before paying. Visas.pt is the honest one: its +€50 rush prioritises their work within 2 business days, with the tax office's time explicitly outside their control. That distinction is the difference between a provider managing your expectations and one selling certainty it doesn't have.

The genuinely fastest lever isn't a fee. It's your documents. The biggest real-world delay is usually blurry passport photos, proof of address older than three months, or a power of attorney that needs re-signing. Clean scans before you pay shave more days off most applications than any rush tier. And if what you need is portal access rather than the NIF number itself, save your money: no rush beats the 2–4 week password wait.

What the reviews actually say

Trustpilot is the one place providers can't curate. The score matters less than the shape of the record: how big the review base is, how recent the reviews are, and whether the bad ones cluster around one theme. A 4.9 from 40 reviews is a marketing campaign; a 4.7 from 2,600 is a company.

Review records, ranked by strength

This table is ordered by review volume first, then score. Ratings drift month to month, so verify the current score on Trustpilot before you buy. Read our individual takes: e-Residence · Anchorless · Bordr · Novomove · Visas.pt · NIFOnline.pt.

Read the one- and two-star reviews, not the score. Happy customers write about feelings; unhappy ones write about specifics: refund refusals, months without delivery, and support that stops answering after payment. One angry review is noise; six describing the same failure is a pattern. And remember every one of these businesses solicits reviews, so treat the base as directional evidence, not proof.

Three patterns to scan for: refund fights (no stated refund policy plus angry reviews about withheld money is disqualifying), hidden add-ons (password surcharges, renewal charges surfacing after payment), and vanishing support (pre-sales chat is always excellent; the reviews that matter describe what happened when something went wrong).

Do you even need a NIF service?

The number itself is free. Walk into a Finanças office in Portugal with your passport and proof of address and EU citizens usually walk out the same day; non-EU nationals pay a €10.20 fee. Appointments are booked through the Finanças contact centre (217 206 707. It is worth confirming the current number on portaldasfinancas.gov.pt before you call). Our NIF guide covers the DIY route step by step.

So why does anyone pay €79–150? Two reasons: you're not in Portugal yet, and most people need the NIF before they travel, for the bank account that proves funds for a visa, or the lease that proves accommodation. Opening that account from abroad is its own decision — our comparison of the services that open it for you prices the power-of-attorney route against the alternatives. And applying remotely means a local representative, which is precisely what these services sell. If your move is months away and you'll be in Lisbon anyway, save the money. If the consulate appointment is in three weeks, don't.

Red flags before you pay

No legitimate NIF service can guarantee a delivery date. The tax office has the final say, and backlogs spike around visa season. Anyone selling a "guaranteed 24-hour NIF" is promising certainty they don't have. Also walk away from prices far below the market (under ~€79 usually means the fiscal rep is missing or imaginary), no company registration or address anywhere on the site, and payment demanded by wire transfer with no invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to get a NIF online in Portugal?

Novomove costs €79, which bundles 12 months of fiscal representation. Visas.pt charges €95 without representation, so it's only cheaper if you genuinely don't need a rep. The cheapest route overall is in person at a Finanças office (free for EU citizens, €10.20 for non-EU nationals) if you're already in Portugal.

Do I need a fiscal representative to get a NIF?

In practice, yes. If you're a non-EU citizen applying remotely, every legitimate service routes your application through one. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens can usually skip it via electronic notifications. And under Decree-Law 44/2022, third-country nationals can drop the rep after year one by activating electronic notification channels on the Portal das Finanças. Self-employed workers are the exception: a VAT representative stays mandatory.

How long does it take to get a NIF through an online service?

Standard delivery runs 3–10 working days across the six providers we compared. Novomove quotes 3–7 on its standard service. Anchorless sells the fastest rush: 1–2 day premium processing (Visas.pt also offers a 2-day rush for +€50). Note the Finanças portal password always arrives separately, roughly 2–3 weeks after the NIF, on the tax authority's timeline.

Can I use my NIF for a bank account and a visa application?

Yes. That's exactly what it's for. The NIF is permanent and personal: you keep the same number for life, whether you're resident or non-resident. Banks require it to open an account, and consulates expect it in your visa dossier.

Why do NIF service prices keep changing?

Because it's a young, competitive market. In 2026 we've seen headline prices move: Novomove €69→€79, Visas.pt €64→€95, Anchorless €89→€99. Some of these may reflect expiring discount codes rather than base-price rises. We re-verify headline prices and renewal terms against provider sites and log every change in our provider update log.

Is it safe to send my passport to an online NIF service?

With an established provider, yes. The mechanism is a power of attorney (procuração) authorizing their representative to file on your behalf, which is standard. Look for a registered company, named legal partners (Novomove uses bar-registered lawyers), a real refund policy, and independent reviews. Walk away from guaranteed dates, wire-only payments, or prices far under the market.

Which NIF provider has the best reviews?

e-Residence has the largest review base by far: 2,600+ Trustpilot reviews, which is the hardest signal to fake. Anchorless holds around 4.9/5 across 1,500+ reviews. Visas.pt is rated Excellent (around 4.5–4.7) on a smaller base, so read the individual reviews there. Scores drift month to month, so verify the current rating on Trustpilot before you buy.

Is paying extra for rush NIF delivery worth it?

It depends what your deadline needs. If you need the NIF number itself for a visa dossier or bank appointment within two weeks, Visas.pt's €145 all-in 2-business-day prioritisation is the best-value rush we found; Anchorless sells faster premium tiers at prices that move. If what you need is Portal das Finanças access, save your money. The password arrives 2–4 weeks after the NIF by post, and no rush fee touches that wait.
