Opening a Portuguese bank account remotely: the four routes, honestly priced

Portuguese banks do not make it easy to open an account from abroad. Most will ask you to show up in person, and the ones with online onboarding usually restrict it to people who already hold a residence permit. That leaves four realistic routes: fly there, hire someone to go for you, use a bank's remote process if you qualify, or skip Portuguese banks entirely and use a fintech. We checked the prices, the timelines, and the conditions banks actually apply in October 2026, so you can pick the route that fits your situation instead of guessing.

A Portuguese bank account is the piece of paperwork that usually forces a flight. These routes are how you avoid it.

Key takeaways

  • →There is no fully online signup at a mainstream Portuguese bank for non-residents. Every working remote route involves either a power of attorney or qualifying for the bank's own resident onboarding.
  • →Third-party opener services charge €300–€395 for the standalone account opening (verified: Novomove €300, Visas.pt €395), with 2–6 week timelines. The account itself then costs €6–€15.60 a month plus a ~€250 opening deposit.
  • →You need a NIF before the bank application in almost all cases. Get that sorted first; our NIF comparison shows which service to use.
  • →Some openers require proof that a visa application is underway. If your consulate appointment hasn't happened yet, that condition decides which service you can use.

The short answer

If you will be in Portugal anyway, open the account in person. It is free, it takes an afternoon, and no intermediary can match the simplicity. If you need the account before you travel, pay a third-party service €300–€395 to open it through a power of attorney, and budget 2–6 weeks. If all you need is a working IBAN quickly, Wise or Revolut can be opened from your phone in minutes, but confirm they issue a Portuguese IBAN before you rely on one for a lease or utility contract, because landlords and utilities often insist on it.

The rest of this page is the detail: the four routes side by side, the service-by-service table with verified October 2026 prices, the gating conditions that catch people out, and what the whole exercise really costs. If you are also buying a NIF, read our NIF + bank account bundle comparison first. This page prices standalone account opening only, and the bundle math lives there.

Route 1: open it in person

Walk into a branch with a passport, proof of address, proof of income, and your NIF, and most banks will open an account on the spot. A residence permit is not a legal requirement, and non-resident accounts are routine for property buyers. This is the route banks are set up for, so it has the fewest surprises.

The honest downside is the obvious one. It costs a flight, and branch staff in smaller towns do not always speak English. If your timeline is a visa interview in three weeks, the flight costs more than the €300–€395 a service charges, and you still need the NIF before the appointment. In-person only wins when you are already going.

Route 2: a service opens it for you

This is the standard answer for people who need the account before they travel. You sign a notarised power of attorney authorising the service's legal partner to appear at the bank on your behalf. The bank runs its own identification and compliance checks on you, and final approval stays with the bank. The service handles the forms, the appointment, and the back-and-forth.

The four services we track in this category are the same names from our NIF comparison: Novomove, Visas.pt, Anchorless, and e-Residence. They are administrative intermediaries, not banks, and none of them can force a bank to approve you. Our NIF services comparison covers their track records in detail, since most buyers purchase the NIF and the account together.

Anchorless

€300–€395 band*2–4 weeksYesStrongest review footprint of the four; ask whether a visa application must be underway before you pay

e-Residence

€300–€395 band*2–4 weeksCheck before payingLargest independent review base; confirm the current fee and visa-evidence policy at checkout

* Anchorless and e-Residence's standalone bank fees were not separately published at check time; Portugalist's October 2026 comparison places all four services in the €300–€395 band. Verify the figure at checkout.

Two conditions trip people up, so check them before you pay. First, the visa-application question. Novomove and Anchorless ask for proof that a visa application is underway before they will file the account opening. If you are still at the thinking stage and want the account opened early, Visas.pt does not ask American, Canadian or British applicants for that proof. Second, Americans face an extra layer of bank paperwork. US FATCA reporting makes American customers more work for the bank, so expect a W-9, and remember the FBAR filing once the balance passes $10,000. All four services take US applicants routinely; the walk-in route is where Americans get turned away more often.

Route 3: the bank's own remote process

A few Portuguese banks will start the process online, but every one we checked attaches a catch for non-residents. Millennium BCP lets you submit details and documents online, then asks for a branch visit or certified copies from a lawyer to finish verification. ActivoBank has the best digital onboarding in the country, but it is built for residents; non-residents are often asked to attend a branch appointment to complete compliance checks. Novo Banco will open remotely with a power of attorney, mostly for property buyers and investors it already has a relationship with.

There is also the Chave Móvel Digital, Portugal's digital authentication service. Several banks accept it for remote onboarding, but non-residents can only register for it in person at a Portuguese consular post. It saves you nothing if you cannot get to the consulate. And video-call onboarding, where it exists, is generally reserved for applicants with a Portuguese identity card or residence permit. The bank's own remote process is the fast lane for residents, not a shortcut for non-residents. For which banks accept non-resident applications at all — and through which channel — see our bank-by-bank availability comparison.

Route 4: skip Portuguese banks entirely

Wise, Revolut and N26 open from your phone in minutes, from anywhere in the world, with no NIF and no power of attorney. For holding euros and moving money across borders, they are faster and cheaper than anything above. This is the right answer when the goal is a working euro account, not a Portuguese bank account.

The distinction matters when a Portuguese institution is involved. Some landlords and utility companies require a Portuguese IBAN, and not every fintech issues one with every account type. Confirm the IBAN's country code before you sign a lease or set up utilities on it. If the IBAN starts with PT, you are fine. If it starts with BE, LT or GB, a strict landlord may reject it. Visa applications are another grey area: consulates expect proof of funds, and a statement from a Portuguese bank reads better in a dossier than one from an app. Check your consulate's practice before relying on fintech statements for the interview.

What it really costs: the first year

The service fee is only the entry ticket. Banks charge their own monthly fees, and most ask for an opening deposit that stays your money.

Cost lineTypical amountNotes
Opener service fee€300–€395One-off; Novomove €300 and Visas.pt €395 verified October 2026
Monthly account fee€6–€15.60Varies by bank and account type; ActivoBank-style digital accounts run cheapest
Opening deposit~€250Stays your money; the bank just wants it parked
First-year total€400–€525Service fee + ~12 months of account fees + deposit, before the deposit is counted back as yours

Read that total and the decision gets easier. A €395 service fee sounds like the expensive option until the monthly fees land: the difference between the cheapest and priciest opener is smaller than a year of account charges at the wrong bank. Pick the service on timeline and visa-evidence conditions, and pick the bank on its monthly fee. If you are buying a NIF at the same time, the bundle comparison shows when the two-in-one packages beat buying the halves separately, and when the advertised saving is mostly marketing.

Which route fits your situation

You are flying to Portugal anyway

Open it in person and save the service fee. Bring passport, proof of address, proof of income, and the NIF. Ask for an English-speaking branch in Lisbon or Porto, and go early in your trip so there is time to fix any document complaint.

Your visa interview is in the next month

Pay for the power-of-attorney route and pick the service whose conditions you can meet. If you cannot show a visa application underway, Visas.pt is the one of the four that does not demand it for American, Canadian and British applicants. Budget 2–6 weeks and do not leave it to the final fortnight, because compliance can come back with follow-up questions.

You only need a euro account quickly

Open Wise or Revolut on your phone and skip the Portuguese banking system for now. You can always open the Portuguese account later, in person, once you arrive. Just check the IBAN country code before committing to anything that needs a Portuguese IBAN.

You are buying property from abroad

Talk to the bank before the service. Novo Banco and several others open remotely with a power of attorney for property buyers, and your lawyer may already have a channel into a specific branch. The opener services work fine here too, but a property transaction gives you leverage the standard route does not.

Before you pay a service

The mechanism is legitimate, which makes the scams harder to spot. A real service gives you a signed, notarised power of attorney with a named legal representative, a registered company with a real address, and a written refund policy. Walk away from anyone promising a guaranteed approval date, because the bank decides and no intermediary controls its compliance queue. Walk away from wire-transfer-only payments with no invoice, and from prices far under the €300 band, which usually means the power of attorney is being skipped. That document is the whole legal basis of the service. Without it, nobody can act for you at a Portuguese bank.

One more sequencing note: almost every bank wants the NIF before the account application starts. A few services can get you a NIF and file the account in sequence, which is exactly what the bundles are for. Our NIF + bank account bundle comparison prices the two-in-one packages against buying each half separately, so you can see whether the bundle discount is real before you commit.

For the NIF half specifically, our NIF services comparison re-verified all six providers in October 2026, and our NIF guide covers the DIY route if you are already in Portugal.

The one thing people get backwards

A bank account does not get you a NIF, and a residence permit is not required for either. The order is NIF first, then bank account, then visa dossier. People who try to open the account without the NIF waste weeks and pay for a second round of document checks. Get the NIF sorted first; everything downstream goes faster.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a Portuguese bank account online as a non-resident?

Not through a mainstream bank's own app: online onboarding is generally restricted to residents and residence-permit holders. Non-residents have three working routes: open in person at a branch, pay a service €300–€395 to open through a notarised power of attorney, or use a fintech like Wise or Revolut, which opens in minutes but may not issue a Portuguese IBAN.

Do I need a NIF before opening a bank account in Portugal?

In almost all cases, yes. Banks expect it, and every third-party opener requires it before filing. Get the NIF first; it also speeds up the visa dossier afterwards.

How much does it cost to open a Portuguese bank account remotely?

The opener service charges €300–€395 (verified: Novomove €300, Visas.pt €395, October 2026). The account then carries monthly fees of €6–€15.60, and most banks ask for a ~€250 opening deposit that stays your money. Budget €400–€525 all-in for the first year.

How long does remote account opening take?

Two to four weeks is typical through Novomove, Anchorless or e-Residence; Visas.pt quotes 4–6 weeks. The clock starts after your documents and signed power of attorney are complete, and bank compliance can add follow-up rounds. Allow two months if a visa interview depends on it.

Do I need a visa application underway to open the account?

It depends on the service. Novomove and Anchorless require proof that a visa application is underway. Visas.pt does not ask American, Canadian or British applicants for it. If your consulate appointment hasn't happened yet, this condition decides which service you can use.

Can Americans open a Portuguese bank account remotely?

Yes, and all four services we track take US applicants. Expect extra paperwork: US FATCA reporting makes American customers more work for the bank, so a W-9 is standard. Once the balance passes $10,000, you also have an FBAR filing obligation with the US Treasury.

Is a residence permit required to open a bank account in Portugal?

No. It is not a legal condition. Not having one simply changes the route: residence-permit holders can use banks' own online onboarding, while everyone else goes through a branch, a power of attorney, or a fintech.

Will a Wise or Revolut account work for my visa application?

It depends on your consulate's practice. Fintech accounts open instantly and hold euros cheaply, but consulates expect proof of funds and a statement from a Portuguese bank reads better in a dossier. Confirm before the interview, and check the IBAN's country code: leases and utilities often require an IBAN starting with PT.

Buying the NIF too? Check the bundle math first

Standalone account opening costs €300–€395. The two-in-one NIF + account packages claim a discount — we price every one against buying the halves separately.
