NIF guide · Updated October 2026

How much does a Portuguese NIF cost?

The number itself costs nothing. The Portuguese tax authority charges no fee for issuing a NIF, and the number never expires, so there is no annual NIF fee either. What you pay for is the help getting it: someone to file for you from abroad, a fiscal representative to receive your tax mail, or a lawyer to handle the whole thing. Those three things are priced very differently, and the cheapest headline price is often not the cheapest total. This page adds up the real cost of every route over one year and over three years. For the big picture of all three routes, start with our main NIF guide. For the filing steps on the online route, see our guide to getting a NIF online. For the full document list, see our NIF documents checklist.

Key takeaways

  • →The NIF itself is free, at a tax office or through a service, and it never expires. Every euro you pay goes to the filing, the representation, or the speed, not to the number.
  • →In person, expect €0 as an EU citizen and €0 to about €10 as a non-EU citizen. Online, the standard band in October 2026 is €79 to $140 for the filing plus a first year of representation with most providers.
  • →Price the renewal, not the headline. A €99 first year renewing at about €149 a year costs €397 over three years, while a €79 first year renewing at €79 costs €237.
  • →Rush service adds about €50 for a two day turnaround with some providers. Read rush claims as filing promises, not as promises that the tax authority will issue the number by that date.
  • →The extras that catch people out are VAT added at checkout, a separate charge for the Finanças portal password, translation and notarisation of documents, and courier costs for paper originals.

The short answer

If you can walk into a Finanças office in Portugal, a NIF costs you nothing but the trip. If you are applying from abroad, expect to pay between €79 and $140 for an online service, or between €300 and €700 a year for a lawyer. The gap between those two prices is the gap between a filing service and ongoing legal cover, and most people only need the filing service. The real question is not the first year price. It is what you will still be paying in year two and year three, and whether you need to be paying it at all.

One more distinction matters before any price makes sense. The NIF and the fiscal representative are two separate things. The NIF is yours for life once it is issued. The fiscal representative is a person in Portugal who receives your tax mail and acts as your contact with the tax authority, and that role is what renews every year. When a price looks too good, check which of the two it covers. A service that sells you a NIF and quietly drops the representation after twelve months has not saved you money. It has moved the cost into next year.

RouteWhat you payWhat that covers

In person, EU citizen

€0Issued at a Finanças office, usually the same day. You pay with your time and your trip, not with a fee.

In person, non-EU citizen

€0 to about €10The number itself is free. Some guides report a small administrative charge of about €10.20 for registering a non-EU foreign address, so ask at the desk.

Online through a service

€79 to $140The standard band in October 2026. It covers the filing and, with most providers, a first year of fiscal representation.

Through a lawyer

€300 to €700 a yearWorth it only if you need ongoing legal cover anyway. For a straightforward NIF, it is far more than you need to pay.

Optional tax card

About €6.80A plastic card with the number on it. You do not need it. The number is what banks, landlords, and visa offices ask for.

In person: what free really means

At a Finanças office, the request is free. An EU citizen walks out with the number the same day in most cases, and pays nothing for it. A non-EU citizen should budget for a small administrative charge of about €10 for registering a foreign address outside the EU, though offices apply this unevenly, so treat it as a possibility rather than a fixed fee. Either way, the government side of the bill is tiny.

The real cost of the in-person route is everything around the counter. You need to be in Portugal, you need an appointment at an office that may be booked weeks ahead in Lisbon or Porto, and you need your documents in order, with originals in hand. If you are already planning a trip, that cost is close to zero. If you would fly to Portugal just for the NIF, the flight and the hotel dwarf any service fee, and the online route is the cheaper option by a wide margin. Do not buy a plane ticket to save €99.

The optional tax card is the one small purchase worth skipping. It costs about €6.80 and puts the number on a plastic card, but nobody asks for the card. Banks, landlords, and visa offices ask for the number, and the signed PDF certificate you receive at issue proves it. Save the €6.80.

Online services: what the fee buys

An online service charges for three things: preparing and checking your file, filing it through a representative, and acting as your fiscal representative for the first year in most cases. The standard band in October 2026 runs from €79 to $140. At the lower end sit services that include twelve months of representation. At the upper end sit services priced in dollars, where the exchange rate and the tax treatment at checkout change the final figure.

That checkout figure deserves a close look. Some providers list prices before VAT, and Portuguese VAT runs at 23 percent, which turns a $139 headline into a noticeably larger card charge. Others price in dollars while you pay in euros, so your bank adds its own conversion margin on top. Before you compare two prices, get both to the same point: the total that will actually leave your account, including tax and conversion. A headline that excludes VAT is not a lower price. It is an unfinished one.

Speed is the other paid extra. Standard online delivery runs 3 to 10 working days once documents are accepted, and the clock starts at acceptance, not at payment. A rush option typically adds about €50 and promises filing within one or two days. That promise is about the service filing your case quickly, not about the tax authority issuing the number on a deadline, so buy rush only when your own deadline genuinely depends on the filing date, such as a visa appointment that needs the number on the form. If no appointment depends on it, standard delivery saves you the fee. For the timeline side of the decision, see our full breakdown of NIF delivery times.

One add-on is easy to miss. Most providers include access to the Portal das Finanças as part of the service, which is how you manage the NIF yourself later. At least one major provider charges €20 extra for the portal password. It is a small amount, but it belongs in the comparison, because the portal is how you drop the representative later, check your address record, and download fresh certificates without paying anyone. Ask whether portal access is included before you pay, not after.

Price the renewal, not the headline

A €99 first year that renews at about €149 a year costs €397 over three years. A €79 first year that renews at €79 costs €237. The renewal price is printed in the small print on most provider pages. Find it before you pay, and set a reminder for month eleven, when you can still cancel cleanly.

The three year test

The table below uses October 2026 prices from our provider comparison and assumes you keep representation for the full three years. The totals change if you drop the representative earlier, which many people can do once they have portal access and electronic notifications switched on. That is exactly why the renewal matters: it is a recurring cost you may not need for long, and a high renewal punishes you most in the years when you are least likely to still need it.

OptionFirst yearThree yearsWhy the total lands there

Novomove, with representation

€79€237Renews at €79 a year. The headline and the renewal match, so the three year total holds no surprise.

Anchorless, with representation

€99€397Renews at about €149 a year. The cheapest looking first year here becomes the most expensive over three years.

e-Residence, with representation

€119€317€99 plus a €20 charge for the Finanças portal password that other providers include. Renews at €99 a year.

Visas.pt, without representation

€95€95No representation is included, so there is nothing to renew. This only works if you do not need a representative at all.

The pattern is plain. The provider with the lowest renewal wins over three years even when another provider looks cheaper on day one, and the provider with no representation at all wins outright if you genuinely do not need one. If you are an EU citizen, or you have no Portuguese tax ties and can use electronic notifications instead, a representation-free service is the honest cheapest option. If you own property, hold a Portuguese job, or run a business in Portugal, representation stays mandatory, and the renewal price is the number to compare. Our fiscal representative guide explains who must keep one and who can drop one.

The hidden costs, line by line

Translation. Documents outside English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese need a certified translation, and certification is charged per document. A single birth certificate or proof of address can add tens of euros, and a file with several foreign-language documents can add more than the NIF service itself. Get translations done before you start the clock, and get a quote per document, not a vague estimate.

Signature recognition. A power of attorney signed for a representative who is not a lawyer or a solicitador needs an officially recognised signature, which usually means a notary fee in your home country. Notary prices vary widely by country, from a few euros to well over a hundred, so this is the hidden cost with the widest range. Providers run by lawyers can skip this step, which is one reason their headline price sometimes looks higher but their total lands lower.

Courier and copies. Most online filings run on scans, but some providers still ask for paper originals or certified copies by post. International courier fees and certified copy charges are rarely in the headline price. Ask whether the whole file can be handled digitally before you budget for postage.

Rejection rounds. A rejected document does not usually carry a new government fee, but it can carry a provider refile charge, and it always costs days. Check whether refiling after a rejection is included in the price, and how many rounds are covered. A provider that charges per resubmission turns a document mistake into a second bill.

Bundle temptation. Some providers sell the NIF together with a bank account, a tax filing, or a visa package. A bundle can be good value when you genuinely need every part of it. It is a bad deal when it charges you for services you would have arranged free or cheaper on your own. Price each part separately before accepting a bundle, and compare the bundle math in our NIF and bank account bundle comparison.

Families and companies: multiply carefully

Every person needs their own NIF, so a family of four pays for four filings, not one family filing. Some providers offer a discount for additional family members filed together, and it is worth asking for, but do not assume it. Children follow the same price logic as adults, with a birth certificate standing in for a passport for younger children. A company is a different case entirely: it receives its own company tax number on incorporation, while every director and shareholder still needs a personal NIF first, so budget for the personal numbers before the company costs begin. Our page on company tax numbers explains what the NIPC covers and what incorporation itself costs.

What not to pay for

Do not pay an annual fee for the NIF itself, because there is none. Any invoice labelled as a NIF renewal is really a representation renewal, a portal service, or a subscription you may not need, and it deserves a question before payment. Do not pay for a tax card you will never be asked to show. Do not pay a rush fee when no appointment or deadline depends on the date. And do not pay for representation you no longer need: once you have portal access with electronic notifications active, check whether you can cancel, and put the cancellation date in your calendar when you sign up, not when the renewal invoice arrives.

The provider-by-provider price comparison, with delivery times, renewal prices, and review history side by side, is in our NIF services comparison. Use that page to pick a provider, and use this page to judge the total. The cheapest NIF is the one whose three year total, including tax, extras, and the renewal you will actually keep, is the lowest. On that test, the in-person route wins whenever you are already in Portugal, and the low-renewal online service wins for everyone applying from abroad.

Before you pay: five checks

First, confirm the total at checkout, including VAT and any currency conversion, not just the headline price. Second, find the renewal price for fiscal representation and write down the three year total. Third, confirm that Finanças portal access is included, and whether a password charge applies. Fourth, ask what happens after a rejection: is a refile included, and how many rounds are covered. Fifth, check whether translation, signature recognition, and courier costs are yours or the provider's. Five answers, and the real price is in front of you.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Portuguese NIF free?

Yes. The tax authority charges no fee for issuing a NIF, at a Finanças office or through a representative, and the number never expires. What costs money is the help around it: a filing service, fiscal representation, or a lawyer.

How much does an online NIF service cost in 2026?

The standard band in October 2026 is €79 to $140 for the filing plus, with most providers, a first year of fiscal representation. Check the checkout total including VAT, because some providers list prices before tax.

What does fiscal representation renewal cost?

It varies widely by provider, from about €79 a year to about €149 a year. That difference decides the three year total: €237 against €397 on otherwise similar first year prices. Always compare the renewal, not just the headline.

Does a NIF expire or need an annual renewal fee?

No. A NIF is issued once and kept for life, and there is no annual NIF fee. Any yearly charge is for fiscal representation or another ongoing service, not for the number itself.

How much extra does a rush NIF cost?

About €50 with providers that offer a two day option. Treat it as a filing promise, not an issuance promise: the service files quickly, but the tax authority still issues the number on its own timetable.

What hidden costs should I budget for with a NIF?

Certified translations for documents outside English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese, notary fees for recognising a power of attorney signature, courier costs for paper originals, VAT added at checkout, and a possible separate charge for the Finanças portal password.

How much does a NIF cost for a family?

Every person needs their own NIF, so multiply the filing cost by the number of people. Ask about family discounts for filings made together, and remember that children follow the same price logic as adults.
